God is dead?

This graffiti was scrawled next to Lille 3, my current uni.
Dieu est mort. God is dead. This begs the question, was he once alive then?
I'm guess what is really meant by the graffiti message is that 'we don't NEED God. We are self-sufficient, merci beaucoup.' Whether we think we are self-sufficient or not, how does this whatsoever affect the reality or irreality (if that's a word) of God?

Hi, it's Laura (tsukiyo yumei) from Lille 3. "Dieu est mort" is a quote from Nietzsche, a famous philosopher. It doesn't mean "God is dead", but something like "christian moral, theological codes are eradicated by modern society". People doesn't need religion anymore, they can live without the chistians' faith by following their own codes. Dunno if it helped, but if not, you can try to read "Le crépuscule des Idoles" by Nietzsche ^^
